The picture
of Mr. Haworth above was taken in April, 1955, for the Weirton
Steel Bulletin. In the picture, J. Robert Haworth, Art
Instructor of Weir High,
is putting the finishing touches on the 3.5 x 22 feet mural to be
permanently
displayed at Swaney Memorial Library in New Cumberland. Mr.
Haworth
became Art Instructor at Weir High School in 1932, and had inspired
many
young Weirton students to become nationally famous artists.
Dr. Raymond S. Greco, chairman of WAMCC's Art Exhibition Committee,
suggested the idea to have an annual event named after Mr. Haworth and
honor one of his famous art students each year, displaying their
artwork.
The student selected for the 1st art exhibit (in 2009) was Harry Ameredes,
who is
known worldwide for his sketches, wood art, and paintings. The
student selected for the 2nd art exhibit (in 2010) was Anthony Sellitti,
known for his wonderful paintings. Plans
for this years Art
Exhibition are underway, and the event is scheduled to open the new
Weirton Area Museum & Cultural Center on November 12 (see poster above).
Bill Amerdes will be the featured artist, and artwork by all local artists and
art students is welcome. Check back here for more
details.
